The old gas had gone gummy in the carburetor, varnishing the tiny jets that meter fuel into the engine, and the spark plug had fouled from sitting with fuel residue against it. Neither problem was expensive to fix. Both were entirely preventable with about ten minutes of care the previous fall, and both are the two most common reasons any small engine refuses to start.
Small engine problems get treated by many owners as mysterious and intimidating, worth an expensive trip to a repair shop for anything beyond checking if there is gas in the tank. In reality, the overwhelming majority of no start problems trace back to one of exactly two systems: fuel and spark, and both are simple enough for an owner to maintain and diagnose without specialized training.
Old fuel is the single most common cause of a no start
Gasoline begins breaking down within thirty to sixty days, especially ethanol blended fuel common at most pumps, forming gummy varnish deposits that clog the tiny passages in a carburetor. A tiller left with fuel in the tank over a winter or any extended storage period is the single most predictable cause of spring starting problems. Either run the tank dry before storage, or add a fuel stabilizer and run the engine briefly to circulate treated fuel through the entire system before storing it. Both approaches take under five minutes and prevent the vast majority of fuel related no starts.
Spark plugs are cheap and worth replacing preemptively
A spark plug costs only a few dollars and directly determines whether the engine's fuel and air mixture actually ignites. Fouling from carbon buildup, oil residue, or old fuel residue prevents a clean spark, and a plug that has not been replaced in a full season of use, or one that sat through an off season with fuel in the cylinder, is a common and inexpensive suspect when an engine cranks but will not fire. Replacing the spark plug at the start of each season, rather than waiting for it to actually fail, costs almost nothing and eliminates one of the two most likely causes of a no start before it happens.
The air filter problem that looks like something else
A clogged air filter starves the engine of the air needed for proper combustion, and it can produce symptoms, rough running, stalling, difficulty starting, that owners often misdiagnose as a fuel or spark problem, spending time and money chasing the wrong fix. Checking and cleaning or replacing the air filter takes only a minute or two and should be one of the first checks made, not the last, when a small engine is running poorly, precisely because it mimics more complicated problems while being the easiest of the three to fix.
Oil level and condition matter for longevity, not just starting
Running a four stroke engine with low or badly degraded oil does not always prevent starting, but it dramatically shortens the engine's working life, and a seized engine from oil neglect is a far more expensive problem than a fouled plug. Checking oil level before every significant use, and changing it at the interval specified in the owner's manual, usually after the first five hours on a new engine and then every twenty five to fifty hours after, prevents the kind of wear that turns a routine maintenance conversation into a replacement engine conversation.
Building a seasonal routine instead of reactive fixes
The owners who rarely deal with a no start are not the ones who never have a mechanical problem. They are the ones who treat spring startup and fall storage as two scheduled events with a specific short checklist, rather than only touching the machine when something has already gone wrong. A fifteen minute routine at each of these two points, fuel, plug, filter, oil, catches nearly everything covered here before it becomes a problem in the middle of a planting or tilling day.
Knowing when it actually is time for a mechanic
Fuel, spark, and air account for the large majority of no start problems, but a compression issue, a genuinely mechanical problem inside the engine, is a real possibility once those three have been ruled out and a plug that sparks and fuel that flows still fail to produce a run. This is the point where a repair shop's diagnostic tools earn their cost, and it is worth recognizing that point rather than continuing to swap cheap parts indefinitely on a problem those parts were never going to fix.
