They were taken by a neighborhood dog that got into the run during broad daylight while I was at work, through a gap in fencing I had judged too small for anything to fit through. It was not. A first time chicken keeper braces for the predator that shows up in stories and folklore, and gets caught off guard by the one that actually lives two houses down.
Predator proofing advice tends to focus heavily on nocturnal, dramatic threats, foxes, coyotes, weasels, when the actual losses most backyard keepers experience come from a narrower and more mundane set of culprits, and from gaps in daytime security that get far less attention than the coop's nighttime lockup routine.
The predators that actually cause the most losses
Depending on region, raccoons, hawks, and domestic or stray dogs account for a large share of backyard chicken losses, and all three operate differently than the fox scenario most new keepers picture. Raccoons are dexterous enough to open simple latches and will work at a weak point over multiple nights rather than attacking once and leaving. Hawks strike during the day, in the open, and no amount of nighttime security addresses that risk at all. Dogs, whether a neighbor's escaped pet or a stray, often get into runs through fencing that was secure against digging animals but never rated for a determined, larger animal pushing or jumping.
Daytime security gets far less attention than it deserves
Most predator proofing guidance concentrates on the coop at night, latches, buried wire, secure doors, and treats the daytime run as inherently safer simply because keepers or other activity are nearby. Hawks and dogs do not respect that assumption. An open topped run, common because keepers assume ground level fencing is the main concern, leaves birds fully exposed to aerial predators, and a run secured against digging but not against a jumping or climbing dog offers no real daytime protection either.
The buried wire detail that actually stops digging predators
A fence that simply meets the ground is not secure against raccoons, foxes, or dogs that dig, all of which will exploit a base that is not physically buried or angled outward underground. Burying hardware cloth twelve inches deep, or bending the base outward in an L shape buried a few inches down, stops digging predators far more reliably than a taller fence with an unprotected base, since most digging predators work at the base rather than attempting to climb or jump a tall fence.
Latches that look secure but are not
Simple hook and eye latches, common on inexpensive prebuilt coops, are exactly the kind of mechanism a raccoon's dexterous hands can work open over a few nights of persistent effort. A carabiner clip or a double latch mechanism, requiring two separate motions to open, defeats this specific vulnerability cheaply and should be considered close to mandatory rather than an optional upgrade on any coop housing birds in an area with raccoons.
Covering the run changes the risk category entirely
A fully covered run, with netting or wire over the top rather than just around the sides, is the single change that addresses the daytime hawk risk that ground level fencing does nothing about. It is often skipped because it adds cost and complexity to a run's construction, but for keepers in areas with any hawk activity, an uncovered run is a genuine and ongoing risk that no amount of ground level security solves.
Building a realistic threat list for your specific property
Rather than following a generic list of predators to guard against, walk your own property at different times of day and note what you actually see: neighborhood dogs, hawks circling overhead, raccoon tracks near a water source. This specific, local threat list, built from actual observation rather than a general guide, tells you which of the fixes above matter most for your situation and which are lower priority given what genuinely visits your yard.
Losing one bird at a time versus losing the whole flock
A hawk strike typically takes one bird and leaves. A predator that gets inside a coop overnight, a raccoon that opens a weak latch or a dog that pushes through a fence gap, often kills far beyond what it needs to eat, a behavior called surplus killing that can wipe out an entire flock in a single incident. This is precisely why nighttime coop security deserves more absolute rigor than daytime run security, even though daytime incidents are more frequent in raw count. The rare nighttime breach carries a dramatically higher potential loss than the more common daytime hawk strike.
What changes once you add livestock guardian animals
A dog trained specifically as a livestock guardian, or in some situations a donkey or a goose sharing the same space as a flock, adds a layer of deterrence that fencing alone cannot, particularly against daytime aerial predators that no ground level barrier addresses. This is a significant commitment, not a casual addition, and it suits larger operations with the space and time to manage another animal properly more than a small backyard setup with only a handful of hens. For a small flock, investing further in the physical security described above usually delivers more protection per dollar than adding a guardian animal would.
